Stalking and harassing of helpless women

INCIDENTS of sexual harassment have increased sharply during the last few years and it is indeed alarming. We cannot remain silent and allow it to continue. We must make our society safe for women as they constitute nearly half of our population. Of late there are frequent reports of sexual crimes unleashed against women in the country. According to reports, there were 93 incidents of rape in last three months of the current year. This however excludes number of sex crimes against women not published in media reports. Many victims conceal facts out of fear of being further stigmatized by the society. Sadly our society is prone to prone to blame the victims and not the offenders. Any criminal procedure in our country is a lengthy affair and many victims and their family members do not like to take the pains of the time killing process. They can not be blamed for doing so. When a woman lodges a complaint about sexual harassment, people around her start cooking different stories about her which further humiliate the victim and her family. Our society needs to change its mindset. If we cannot make the society safe for women, we cannot expect our country to move forward to say the least. Because leaving the women behind will only pull us back. It is high time we ensure women's safety and honour and take necessary steps to make the society safe for women.  Rumana Sharmeen
